Karen grew up in mining town, women worked either in a mill or in the pottery industry and men worked in the pit. At 21 she'd worked in all three industries and watched them all disappear. She left to study Literature in Liverpool where she taught in schools that sane people avoided. Angry and frustrated, she wrote her first script about a mining community torn apart, she's still angry and frustrated and so still writing.
